AEON FLUX SET VISIT

2005
Starburst Magazine, issue 321

Charlize Theron's co-star Marton Csokas plays Aeon's love interest and nemesis Trevor Goodchild. He loved the TV series and was "surprised" to hear that a film was being made. "I didn't quite get why but it pricked my interest, so after reading the screenplay and meeting with Karyn [Kusama, director of this project and Girlfight] and hearing about her ideas, I understood the reasoning as to why the film would be made."

"It was a leaping-off point rather than a replication, which would be madness in my opinion. Stylistically, there are various shadows from the animated series, but it's taken it to another place."

"My character, Goodchild, in relation to the animated series, is quite different. We've journeyed somewhere else within the film, so Trevor has more of a human dimension and, within the story, he's a scientist and he saved the world, or attempts to. He plugs his work into the picture at some point from his perspective."

Csokas is generous with his praise for Theron, with whom he shares a number of key scenes that he describes as "a game of chess of sorts - emotionally, psychologically and sometimes physically."

"Charlize brings a precision and she brings a great deal of professionalism, and within that precision, she knows exactly what she wants to do with it. What I most admire about what she has done, although we haven't finished it yet, is the physical exposition of the character. She was swinging from emotional state, hatred and love while being in physical restrictions. She embodies the character with a great deal of expressionistic physicality, which I admire very much."

While the star of action-packed blockbusters like Return of the King and Stars Wars II, Attack of the Clones had his interest sparked by the animated series a long time ago, he points out how the screenplay made a particular impression on him and how well he believes it will translate to the silver screen.

"The screenplay itself, I think, embodies archetype and strong structure, so that like all good stories, you can extract myths that have already been told before, and tell a story that has a unique twist. Karyn has a broad knowledge of literature, art, music - of life it seems to me. Her ability to be able to express and communicate, and the use of anachronism, is very strong, which I think is very important in any work of art so that when you have violence, you also have beauty, for example."

Marton was naturally concerned with his co-star injured herself, but learned to look on the bright side of the subsequent brief delays.

"I think we were all very empathetic towards Charlize's predicament, but a lot of people had been working very hard for a very long time so it was a blessing in disguise."
