MARTONISMS

On Romulus, My Father:

"There are certainly similarities to the stories that my father and friends of the family told me," [Marton] Csokas says.

"They shared the shock of the new, coming from an old established culture and what it was to arrive in a very foreign land. My father was the only person left in his family, and off he went from 12 years old. The story of Romulus is not dissimilar to that."

"He's the light in the darkness, which is why I loved playing Hora," Csokas says. "He's full of sun and life. I could do with a lot more of Hora in my life."

News and Updates

arrow 7/29/07 - The July 28th edition of THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD included a long article about three competing productions of WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF. Edward Albee's masterwork has been enjoying a world wide revival the last two years and Australia is its latest stop. There are several quotes from Marton who turns out to be a serious fan of the play.

Csokas has seen many versions of the play, including the recent Broadway revival with Kathleen Turner that renewed interest in the work. Each time, he has come away pondering the same questions as the protagonists battle it out in the boxing ring of a living room.

"Who's on whose side? Do these people hate each other or do they love each other with a great distorted passion?" Csokas asks.

THE Australian film Romulus, My Father has been selected to screen at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. The film, which is based on Raimond Gaita's critically acclaimed memoir, has exceeded $2 million at the box office since its May 31 release.

The Toronto screening will be part of the festival's special presentations line-up, showcasing major films, major stars, and major filmmakers.

Director Richard Roxburgh said he was delighted by the news.

"It's an honour," he said.

"To be selected to screen alongside films by directors such as the Coen brothers and John Sayles is incredibly humbling."

Romulus, My Father tells the story of Romulus, his beautiful wife, Christina, and their struggle in the face of great adversity to bring up their son, Raimond.

The film stars Eric Bana, Franka Potente and Kodi Smit-McPhee, and is still screening in cinemas across Australia.
